Quick start — 7 easy steps
Welcome! This guide walks you through the essential steps to get your Ledger device up and running — from unboxing to sending your first transaction. Take your time on each step and never share your recovery phrase with anyone.
- Unbox & inspect. Make sure the packaging is sealed and the tamper-evident sticker is intact. Verify the device model matches your order.
- Power on & choose PIN. Connect your Ledger to a computer or phone with the provided cable. Create a secure 4–8 digit PIN using the device buttons. Never use obvious PINs like 1234 or your birth year.
- Write down the recovery phrase. Your device will display a 24-word recovery phrase (sometimes 12 on older models). Write it on the supplied card — never store it digitally or photograph it. Store the card in a safe, separate location.
- Install Ledger Live. Download Ledger Live only from Ledger.com/Start or the official Ledger website. Ledger Live lets you manage accounts, check balances, and update firmware.
- Add accounts & apps. Within Ledger Live, install the cryptocurrency apps you need (Bitcoin, Ethereum, etc.) and add accounts. The device signs transactions — Ledger Live only displays balances and prepares transactions.
- Update firmware. Check for firmware updates in Ledger Live. Firmware updates can include security improvements; install them when prompted, but only while connected to a trusted computer.
- Send a small test transaction. Before moving large amounts, send a small test transaction to confirm everything works end-to-end. Verify the address on the device screen before confirming.

- Never share your recovery phrase or PIN.
- Only download Ledger Live from the official site.
- Keep firmware and apps up to date.
